La Madonna de Bogota
Raphael·1517
Historical Context
The Madonna de Bogotá (attributed to Raphael's workshop, c. 1517) is a variation on the Madonna and Child type produced by Raphael's studio for the international market that had developed around his name. Workshop repetitions of Raphael's popular compositions were part of the Roman studio's regular production, with assistants executing designs based on the master's cartoons to satisfy demand that exceeded Raphael's personal capacity to produce. The painting's eventual presence in South America, acquired during the colonial period, demonstrates the extraordinary geographic reach of Raphael's influence — his compositions were copied, adapted, and transported across the world in a dissemination that no other Renaissance painter matched.
Technical Analysis
The composition follows Raphael's established Madonna format with warm coloring and smooth modeling, though variations in execution quality suggest a workshop product from the master's design.
