The Visitation by Perugino

The Visitation

Perugino·1470

Historical Context

The Visitation, depicting the meeting between the pregnant Virgin and her older cousin Elizabeth, appears in this early work from around 1470 that shows Perugino at the beginning of his independent career. The Visitation subject required an artist to convey the spiritual recognition between two women carrying children of cosmic significance — Mary bearing the Son of God, Elizabeth bearing John the Baptist. Perugino's early handling of this intimate narrative reveals his formation within the Umbrian devotional tradition, before his Florentine training gave his figures the idealizing grace and spatial clarity that define his mature work. The early 1470s date places this among a small group of works documenting his emergence as an independent painter.

Technical Analysis

The early composition shows Perugino working within established Florentine and Umbrian conventions while developing his characteristic approach to harmonious figure arrangement. The two women's meeting is rendered with the serene grace that would become his hallmark.
