Baptism of Christ
Giovanni Bellini·1500
Historical Context
Giovanni Bellini's Baptism of Christ, painted around 1500-1502 for the church of Santa Corona in Vicenza, where it remains in situ, is one of his greatest late altarpieces. The work shows Christ's baptism by John in the Jordan, set against a majestic mountain landscape. The painting's survival in its original church setting makes it one of the most complete Renaissance devotional experiences still available, with the architecture, light, and painting working together as intended.
Technical Analysis
Bellini achieves monumental atmospheric effects in his late masterpiece, with the luminous sky and detailed mountain landscape creating a vast natural setting that envelops the baptismal scene in warm, unified light.
