The Judgement of Paris
Raphael·1514
Historical Context
Raphael's Judgement of Paris, dating to around 1514 at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, relates to his designs for an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi that became one of the most influential prints of the Renaissance. The composition, derived from an ancient sarcophagus, would later inspire Manet's Déjeuner sur l'Herbe. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. The Italian Renaissance context brought a new emphasis on classical antiquity, mathematical perspective, and the idealization of the human figure that transformed European art.
Technical Analysis
The composition demonstrates Raphael's mastery of classical figural arrangement with idealized nude forms positioned in a harmonious landscape setting, reflecting his deep study of antique sculpture and mythology.
