Dresden Triptych by Jan van Eyck

Dresden Triptych

Jan van Eyck·1437

Historical Context

The Dresden Triptych, a small devotional work by Jan van Eyck dated 1437, is a masterpiece of miniature painting now in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. The central panel shows the Virgin and Child in a church interior flanked by Saints Catherine and Michael. Despite measuring only 33 x 27.5 cm, the triptych contains an astonishing wealth of detail that demonstrates Van Eyck's ability to compress monumental grandeur into an intimate devotional format.

Technical Analysis

The triptych demonstrates Van Eyck's unrivaled control of the oil medium at miniature scale, with microscopic details in the architectural carving, jeweled borders, and reflected light that reward close examination.
