Cristo in pietà tra due angeli
Ambrogio Bergognone·1488
Historical Context
Ambrogio Bergognone (also called Borgognone) was the leading painter of the Certosa di Pavia and one of the most important Lombard artists of the late fifteenth century. This Cristo in Pietà between two angels from around 1488 reflects the devotional intensity of his work for the Carthusian monastery. Bergognone's serene, contemplative style suited the meditative spirituality of the Carthusian order. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting.
