Diptych of Philip de Croÿ with The Virgin and Child by Rogier van der Weyden

Diptych of Philip de Croÿ with The Virgin and Child

Rogier van der Weyden·1460

Historical Context

Rogier van der Weyden's Diptych of Philip de Croÿ with the Virgin and Child, painted around 1460 and now in the Huntington Library, depicts Philip de Croÿ, a prominent Burgundian nobleman, in prayer before the Virgin and Child on the companion panel. The devotional diptych format—a portrait facing a sacred image—was one of the most important formats in Netherlandish devotional art, allowing the patron to be depicted in perpetual prayer before the divine.

Technical Analysis

Rogier renders the nobleman with his characteristic precise portraiture technique, using careful oil glazing for the luminous flesh tones and detailed costume rendering, while the companion panel shows the Virgin with his typical refined grace.
