San Pietro Martire Triptych
Fra Angelico·1420
Historical Context
Lorenzo Monaco's Annunciation Triptych of 1406, now in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, demonstrates his mastery of the triptych format for private devotion. Created during his years at the Camaldolese monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli, this work exemplifies the spiritual refinement that made Lorenzo Monaco Florence's preeminent painter before the rise of Masaccio. Fra Angelico — born Guido di Pietro, known in religion as Fra Giovanni da Fiesole — was a Dominican friar whose painting practice was inseparable from his spiritual vocation.
Technical Analysis
The triptych features Lorenzo Monaco's signature flowing draperies and luminous palette of blues, pinks, and gold, with the Annunciation scene framed by saints in the lateral panels and unified by continuous gold tooling.
