The Adoration of the Magi by Cesare da Sesto

The Adoration of the Magi

Cesare da Sesto·1516

Historical Context

Cesare da Sesto's Adoration of the Magi from around 1516-1519 was painted for the church of Sant'Agostino in Naples. As one of Leonardo's closest Milanese followers, Cesare brought Leonardesque techniques to Southern Italy, helping to disseminate the master's innovations beyond Lombardy. The 1510s were a decade of extraordinary artistic achievement across Europe, shaped by the mature works of Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and the Venetian masters.

Technical Analysis

The Leonardesque sfumato and atmospheric handling demonstrate Cesare's close study of Leonardo's technique, with the elaborate procession and rich costumes rendered in warm, atmospheric tones.
