Adoration of the Magi
Gerard David·1495
Historical Context
The Magi approach the Holy Family in this Adoration from 1495 at the Uffizi by Gerard David, the last great painter of the Bruges school. David succeeded Memling as the leading artist in Bruges, maintaining the city's tradition of meticulous oil technique and quiet devotional painting even as artistic leadership in the Netherlands shifted to Antwerp. His Adorations combine the calm, measured compositions of the Bruges tradition with his own particularly luminous color sense.
Technical Analysis
David arranges the Adoration figures with the balanced clarity characteristic of late Bruges painting, each figure carefully placed within a unified spatial setting. His oil technique achieves remarkable luminosity through transparent glazes, particularly in the landscape background and the rich fabrics of the Magi's costumes. The palette features deep blues, rich reds, and the characteristic warm greens of the Bruges school.
