Adoration of the Magi
Lorenzo Monaco·1420
Historical Context
Lorenzo Monaco's Adoration of the Magi, painted around 1420 for the Uffizi, is among his grandest and most elaborate compositions. The Epiphany subject allowed Lorenzo Monaco to display his mastery of ornamental detail and processional composition in what would be one of the last major International Gothic paintings in Florence. Lorenzo Monaco — Piero di Giovanni — was a Camaldolese monk who became one of Florence's most gifted painters in the transition between the Gothic and the Early Renaissance.
Technical Analysis
The sweeping procession of the Magi and their retinue creates a continuous decorative rhythm across the panel, with Lorenzo Monaco's luminous palette and sinuous line reaching their fullest expression in the elaborate costumes and landscape.
