The Adoration of the Magi
Andrea Mantegna·1495
Historical Context
The Adoration of the Magi at the Getty Museum, painted around 1495, depicts the Three Kings' visit to the Christ Child — one of the most ceremonially rich subjects in Christian art. Mantegna brings to the exotic procession his archaeological knowledge of Eastern costume and classical antiquity Andrea Mantegna combined a scholar's knowledge of Roman antiquity with extraordinary graphic precision, making Mantua a major center of Renaissance art under his long patronage.
Technical Analysis
Jewels, textiles, and metalwork are rendered with a precision that approaches trompe l'oeil — each gemstone catches the light distinctly, each fabric fold follows the logic of its material. The composition is arranged as a frieze-like procession that recalls Mantegna's Triumph of Caesar series.
