Adoration of the Magi
Pontormo·1522
Historical Context
Pontormo's Adoration of the Magi of 1522 reworks a traditional subject that was enormously popular in Florentine art, from Gentile da Fabriano through Botticelli and Leonardo. By 1522, Pontormo was developing his distinctive Mannerist approach, and this treatment of the Adoration breaks with the orderly, processional compositions of his predecessors in favor of a more compressed, emotionally charged arrangement. trained by Leonardo and Andrea del Sarto, developed radically original Mannerist idiom in Florence.
Technical Analysis
The composition departs from traditional Adoration formats through its unusual spatial compression and the agitated poses of the figures. Pontormo's high-keyed palette and restless, sinuous line work create a mood of excited devotion rather than serene contemplation.
