Adoration of the Shepherds
Andrea Mantegna·1450
Historical Context
Andrea Mantegna's Adoration of the Shepherds, painted around 1450 and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is an early work depicting the humble shepherds worshipping the newborn Christ. This scene from the Nativity narrative allowed Mantegna to contrast rough pastoral figures with the divine infant, a contrast he heightened through his characteristic precise rendering. The painting dates to his formative Paduan period before his move to the Gonzaga court in Mantua.
Technical Analysis
The early work displays Mantegna's developing style with firm drawing, solid figure modeling, and the precise observation of faces and hands that would distinguish his portraiture throughout his career.
