Way of the Cross
Pontormo·1523
Historical Context
The Way of the Cross (Christ Carrying the Cross) was painted in 1523 for the Certosa del Galluzzo Passion cycle. This episode of Christ's journey to Calvary, bearing the weight of the cross, was among the most emotionally charged subjects in Christian art. Pontormo's treatment reflects his engagement with Northern European devotional imagery, particularly Dürer's graphic treatments of the same subject. trained by Leonardo and Andrea del Sarto, developed radically original Mannerist idiom in Florence.
Technical Analysis
The procession is compressed into a shallow, frieze-like space that intensifies the drama through physical proximity of figures. Angular poses and expressive gestures derived from Dürer's woodcuts are rendered in Pontormo's distinctive high-keyed colors.
