The Annunciation with Saint Julian

The Annunciation with Saint Julian from 1455 at the Palazzo Pretorio combines the traditional Annunciation with the patron saint of hospitality. Lippi painted this during his most productive years in Prato, when he was simultaneously working on the cathedral's great fresco cycle. The addition of Julian suggests a specific patron connected to a hospice or charitable institution. Characteristic of Lippi's approach, the work displays elegant linear grace, tender humanity, lyrical Madonna types, decorative refinement.

The architectural setting creates a convincing perspectival space within which Gabriel and the Virgin are placed according to Brunelleschian principles, while Saint Julian's presence adds narrative specificity to the scene.
