Boniface VIII declaring the Jubilee Year of 1300
Giotto·1300
Historical Context
This fresco fragment commemorates the first Jubilee Year proclaimed by Pope Boniface VIII in 1300, which drew millions of pilgrims to Rome. Giotto, already renowned for his revolutionary naturalism at the Arena Chapel in Padua, was likely commissioned for the Lateran Basilica around this period. The work reflects the close relationship between papal patronage and the leading Florentine painters of the early Trecento. The Gothic era in European painting (c.1200-1400) was dominated by devotional works on gold ground, combining Byzantine formalism with growing Gothic naturalism.
Technical Analysis
Giotto employs his characteristic volumetric figure modeling and spatial depth, moving decisively away from the flat Byzantine conventions. The surviving fragment reveals his confident fresco technique with broad, assured brushwork.
