Chestnut and Jas de Bouffan farm by Paul Cézanne

Chestnut and Jas de Bouffan farm

Paul Cézanne·1886

Historical Context

Painted c.1886 and now at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, this view of the chestnut trees and farm at Jas de Bouffan belongs to the crucial mid-1880s period when Cézanne's mature method was fully consolidating. The year 1886 was personally significant: his father died, leaving him financially independent; he finally married Hortense Fiquet; and Zola published L'Oeuvre, a novel whose failed-artist protagonist was widely read as a portrait of Cézanne, ending their friendship. Against this turbulent biographical backdrop, Cézanne was quietly revolutionising his technical approach, developing the sustained colour-plane construction that defines his final two decades.

Technical Analysis

The chestnut trees' vertical trunks create a rhythmic screen across the picture plane, each rendered with parallel strokes of grey-brown and ochre. The dappled autumn light on the foliage is built through varied greens, yellows, and ochres applied in the short parallel hatching of his mature method. Perspective recession is gently compressed, the farmhouse in the middle distance more conceptually present than spatially distant.
