Lamentation of Christ
Giovanni Bellini·1490
Historical Context
Giovanni Bellini's Lamentation of Christ, painted around 1490 and now in the Uffizi, Florence, represents his mature return to the Pietà/Lamentation subject he first addressed in the 1450s. Comparing this late version with his early Pietàs reveals the revolution in his technique—from hard, Mantegnesque linearity to the soft, atmospheric luminosity of his mature oil painting. Bellini's Lamentations were enormously influential, establishing an emotional template for Venetian devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Bellini's mature oil technique achieves deep emotional resonance through warm, blended tones and soft atmospheric light, a marked contrast with the sharp, angular handling of his earlier treatments of the same subject.
