Crucifixion of Christ
Lucas van Leyden·1517
Historical Context
Lucas van Leyden painted this Crucifixion of Christ around 1517 for the Uffizi. Van Leyden was the most brilliant Netherlandish artist of his generation, a prodigy who produced major engravings and paintings from his early teens, rivaling Dürer as the greatest printmaker of the Northern Renaissance. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The Crucifixion demonstrates van Leyden's refined technique with the atmospheric landscape setting and naturalistic figure treatment that distinguish his work from the more linear approach of earlier Netherlandish masters.
