Descent into Limbo
Pietro Lorenzetti·1310
Historical Context
This Descent into Limbo by Pietro Lorenzetti forms part of his celebrated fresco cycle in the left transept of the Lower Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi, executed around 1310-1319. The Passion cycle at Assisi was among the most ambitious mural programs of the early Trecento, and Pietro's contribution rivaled Giotto's nearby frescoes in the upper church. The scene depicts Christ harrowing Hell to free the righteous souls of the Old Testament, a subject that carried powerful theological significance in medieval devotion and was central to the Easter liturgy.
Technical Analysis
Painted in fresco on the basilica walls, the scene demonstrates Pietro's bold approach to spatial composition and dramatic narrative. The medium is not tempera on panel as catalogued but true buon fresco, using mineral pigments applied to wet plaster, with powerful figure groupings and expressive gestures that reveal Pietro's debt to Giotto.
