Sermon on the Mount

Piero di Cosimo created this work around 1481, now in the Sistine Chapel. The painting reflects the artistic culture of the Early Renaissance, when European painters were developing increasingly naturalistic approaches to representation through the study of perspective and natural observation. This period marked a crucial transition in European art, as painters moved beyond medieval conventions toward more naturalistic representation. Piero di Cosimo was one of the most original and eccentric painters in late fifteenth-century Florence, developing a mythological imagination quite unlike any of his contemporaries.

The panel employs carefully layered tempera on prepared wood, with the systematic building of form through tonal gradations and the controlled application of highlights that characterize professional Italian workshop practice.
