Fede e Carità
Pontormo·1513
Historical Context
Fede e Carità (Faith and Charity), painted around 1513, is among Pontormo's earliest surviving works, created when he was approximately nineteen. The painting was executed for the Andrea del Sarto workshop and reflects the collaborative environment of Florentine botteghe, where young artists developed their skills under the guidance of established masters. Characteristic of Pontormo's approach, the work displays intense psychological expressiveness, acidic colors, compressed spatial drama, anti-classical tension.
Technical Analysis
The allegorical figures show the strong influence of Andrea del Sarto in their warm coloring and balanced composition. Early signs of Pontormo's distinctive approach are visible in the emotional intensity of the figures' expressions and the slightly unconventional poses.
