Justice
Raphael·1508
Historical Context
Raphael painted this personification of Justice around 1508, now at the Vatican Museums, as a ceiling medallion for the Stanza della Segnatura's vault above the Justinian law fresco. The four virtues governing the library's intellectual program included Justice as the organizing principle of civil and ecclesiastical law. Justice, shown with her scales and sword, presides over the wall below depicting Gregory IX receiving the Decretals — the foundational moment of canon law. The Stanza della Segnatura program reflects the Renaissance synthesis of ancient philosophical categories with Christian institutional history, and Raphael's personifications give visual form to this ambitious intellectual project. The ceiling's interlocking symbolic program reveals the sophisticated humanist planning behind the decoration.
