Udsigt fra Københavns Rådhus
Peder Severin Krøyer·1902
Historical Context
Udsigt fra Københavns Rådhus (View from Copenhagen's Town Hall) dates from 1902 and shows Krøyer turning his attention briefly from Skagen's coastal light to the urban panorama visible from the recently completed Copenhagen Town Hall, opened in 1905 but already a prominent structure during construction. The shift from his usual subject matter is revealing: Krøyer remained engaged with the changing face of Danish society and its capital even while most associated with the provincial artists' colony in the north. The Hirschsprung Collection in Copenhagen holds this work, keeping it close to the cityscape it records.
Technical Analysis
Krøyer applies a lighter, more airy touch suited to an architectural panorama, with the city spreading below under an open sky. His tonal control and sensitivity to reflected light — refined over years of coastal painting — translate naturally to the grey-blue atmosphere of the Danish capital.
