Altarpiece of Saint Barbara

The Altarpiece of Saint Barbara by Gonzalo Pérez, dated around 1410, is an important example of Spanish Gothic panel painting now in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, Barcelona. The work reflects the International Gothic style that flourished in the Crown of Aragon, where Catalan painters absorbed influences from French, Italian, and Netherlandish art. The cult of Saint Barbara, protector against sudden death, was especially strong in late medieval Spain.

The altarpiece demonstrates Catalan Gothic painting technique with rich gold grounds, vivid tempera colors, and narrative clarity in the rendering of Barbara's hagiographic scenes within a Gothic architectural framework.
