Trinci Palace - Romulus and Remus Loggia
Gentile da Fabriano·1411
Historical Context
The Romulus and Remus Loggia frescoes at the Trinci Palace in Foligno, painted around 1411, form part of an extensive decorative program celebrating the mythological and historical origins of Rome. This secular commission allowed Gentile da Fabriano to explore classical themes alongside the religious subjects that dominated most of his output. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays sumptuous gold and jewel-like color, elegant courtly figures in elaborate brocade, lyrical narrative, exquisite surface detail in goldwork and textiles.
Technical Analysis
The fresco technique employed here shows confident draftsmanship and a decorative sensibility adapted to architectural surfaces, with figures arranged in a continuous narrative format.
