Madonna and Child with Angels
Giorgio Schiavone·1459
Historical Context
Giorgio Schiavone's Madonna and Child with Angels, painted around 1459 and now in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, is a characteristic work of this Dalmatian painter trained in Squarcione's Paduan workshop. Schiavone ("the Slav") was born in Scardona, Dalmatia, and brought the hard, archaeological style of the Paduan school to his devotional paintings. His work represents an important variant of the Paduan tradition parallel to but distinct from Mantegna's development.
Technical Analysis
Schiavone's technique reflects his Paduan training with sharp, metallic drapery folds, elaborate classicizing decorative elements, and the sculptural figure modeling characteristic of Squarcione's workshop approach.
