Madonna and Child with Cherubs
Rosso Fiorentino·1517
Historical Context
Rosso Fiorentino painted this Madonna and Child with Cherubs around 1517 for the Hermitage Museum. Rosso was one of the founders of Florentine Mannerism, developing a deliberately dissonant style that challenged the harmonious ideals of the High Renaissance with angular forms, acid colors, and psychologically charged expressions. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The panel displays Rosso's characteristically anti-classical approach with unexpected color harmonies, angular figure drawing, and an emotional intensity that deliberately subverts the serenity of traditional Madonna compositions.
