Historical Context
Correggio's Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine, painted around 1520 for a Neapolitan patron, depicts the Christ Child placing a ring on the finger of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The subject was enormously popular in Italian devotional art, representing the soul's mystical union with Christ Oil on canvas, increasingly preferred over panel in the sixteenth century, offered greater flexibility for large-scale compositions The work is now in the collection of Museo di Capodimonte in Naples.
Technical Analysis
Correggio's mature sfumato creates an atmosphere of tender mysticism, with the warm, luminous flesh tones and soft drapery folds creating a sense of gentle, enveloping light.
