Sant'Onofrio Altarpiece by Luca Signorelli

Sant'Onofrio Altarpiece

Luca Signorelli·1484

Historical Context

Signorelli's Sant'Onofrio Altarpiece from 1484 is an early major commission that established his reputation in the Umbrian-Tuscan borderland. Sant'Onofrio, an Egyptian hermit who lived naked in the desert for sixty years, was a popular saint of ascetic piety whose cult flourished in monasteries and hermitages. Signorelli's treatment combines the geometric figure construction he learned from Piero della Francesca with a new expressive intensity — the gaunt, weathered saint prefigures the muscular spiritual drama that would reach its apex in his Orvieto Last Judgment frescoes two decades later.

Technical Analysis

Signorelli's altarpiece displays his distinctive muscular figure style with strong modeling and dynamic poses, creating a monumental presence that distinguishes his approach from the softer Umbrian tradition.
