Poetry
Raphael·1508
Historical Context
Raphael painted this personification of Poetry around 1508 for the ceiling vault of the Stanza della Segnatura, the papal library where his greatest fresco cycle would unfold. The four ceiling medallions — Theology, Philosophy, Poetry, and Justice — organized the disciplines governing the library's book collection, with each personification presiding over the appropriate wall fresco below. Poetry's figure introduced the Parnassus fresco depicting Apollo surrounded by ancient and modern poets. The program reflected the neo-Platonic intellectual framework of Julius II's humanist advisors, and Raphael's ability to compress profound conceptual content into graceful, accessible images made him uniquely suited to executing it. These works established his reputation as both artist and intellectual collaborator in the highest cultural project of the age.
