Polyptych of the Duomo of Camerino
Carlo Crivelli·1490
Historical Context
Crivelli's Polyptych of the Duomo of Camerino was one of his major commissions in the Marche, painted for the cathedral of Camerino around 1482. Crivelli received important polyptych commissions throughout the Marche — at Ascoli Piceno, Fabriano, and Camerino — that constitute the core of his achievement. Despite his exile from Venice and relative provincialism relative to the major Italian art centres, his work was highly valued in the Marche and central Adriatic region, and the Camerino polyptych would have been among the most prestigious works in the cathedral's collection.
Technical Analysis
The polyptych format requires consistent treatment across multiple panels, each saint given gold ground, ornamental borders, and the characteristic Crivelli palette — jewel-like lapis blues, deep vermilions, and embossed gilding.
