Trinci Palace - Ponte sospeso
Gentile da Fabriano·1411
Historical Context
This fresco cycle at the Palazzo Trinci in Foligno represents one of Gentile da Fabriano's most important surviving monumental commissions. Painted around 1411-1412 for Ugolino III Trinci, lord of Foligno, the decorative program includes scenes of heroes, liberal arts, and planetary figures spread across multiple rooms. The Trinci Palace frescoes are among the most significant examples of International Gothic secular decoration in Italy, rivaling contemporary cycles in northern courts. They demonstrate Gentile's ability to work on a grand architectural scale while maintaining the jewel-like refinement of his panel paintings.
Technical Analysis
The fresco technique shows Gentile adapting his characteristically refined International Gothic manner to the demands of wall painting. Rich decorative borders frame the scenes, while the figures display the elongated elegance and courtly bearing typical of his style, with vibrant pigments that have survived remarkably well given the medium.
