Presentation of the Virgin Mary at the Temple
Historical Context
Cima da Conegliano's Presentation of the Virgin Mary at the Temple, painted around 1496 and now in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, depicts the young Virgin being presented at the Jerusalem Temple by her parents. The subject, drawn from the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James, was popular in Venetian art—Titian would later paint his monumental version of the same subject. Cima's characteristic clarity and luminous atmosphere distinguish his treatment.
Technical Analysis
Cima composes the narrative scene with his trademark architectural precision and clear, even lighting, using the temple steps to create a rhythmic arrangement of figures ascending toward the High Priest.
