Astronomy
Raphael·1508
Historical Context
Raphael painted this personification of Astronomy around 1508 for the vault of the Stanza della Segnatura, where the ceiling medallions introduced the four disciplines governing Julius II's papal library. Astronomy, representing the mathematical arts and the study of the heavens, appeared alongside Philosophy, Poetry, and Theology in the vault program. The figure likely holds a sphere or astronomical instruments. Though the ceiling medallions are less celebrated than the great wall frescoes below, they were painted first and established the intellectual framework that gave the entire Stanza its coherent program. Raphael's ability to design a complete decorative environment — ceiling, walls, borders — at the age of twenty-five demonstrated the organizational genius alongside his painterly mastery.
