Punishment of the Gamblers by Andrea del Sarto

Punishment of the Gamblers

Andrea del Sarto·1510

Historical Context

The Punishment of the Gamblers by Andrea del Sarto, painted around 1510 as part of the fresco cycle in the atrium of Santissima Annunziata in Florence, depicts a miraculous event in which divine retribution strikes down blasphemous gamblers. This fresco cycle, begun by other artists in the late fifteenth century, was one of the most visible public art projects in Florence. Del Sarto's contribution established his reputation as one of the city's foremost painters while still in his twenties, demonstrating his ability to compose complex multi-figure narratives in the grand manner.

Technical Analysis

The fresco demonstrates del Sarto's early mastery of monumental figure composition, with dramatically foreshortened figures and a dynamic arrangement that conveys the chaos of divine punishment. The confident handling of the fresco medium and the powerful anatomical drawing show the influence of Michelangelo filtered through del Sarto's characteristic grace.
