Holy Family with the Infant St. John
Antonio da Correggio·1514
Historical Context
Correggio's Holy Family with the Infant Saint John from around 1514-1516 shows the sacred families in a tender domestic scene. The natural, unforced interaction between the figures reflects Correggio's gift for making religious subjects feel emotionally authentic and humanly warm Oil on canvas, increasingly preferred over panel in the sixteenth century, offered greater flexibility for large-scale compositions The work is now in the collection of Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles.
Technical Analysis
The warm, golden tonality and soft sfumato create an intimate domestic atmosphere, with the playful interaction between the two children rendered with naturalistic charm.
