Trinci Palace - Sala delle Arti liberali e dei Pianeti
Gentile da Fabriano·1411
Historical Context
This fresco cycle in the Sala delle Arti Liberali e dei Pianeti at the Trinci Palace in Foligno, painted around 1411, is among the most important secular decorative programs of the early fifteenth century. The commission from Ugolino III Trinci gave Gentile da Fabriano the opportunity to work on an ambitious scale depicting the liberal arts and planetary deities. The Early Renaissance (c.1400-1490) saw Italian painters develop linear perspective, naturalistic anatomy, and classical subject matter.
Technical Analysis
Executed in fresco, the cycle demonstrates Gentile's ability to work in monumental format with the same elegance and decorative refinement found in his smaller panel paintings.
