Saint Peter Martyr with Saints Nicholas and Benedict
Historical Context
Cima da Conegliano's Saint Peter Martyr with Saints Nicholas and Benedict, painted around 1500 and now in the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan, depicts the Dominican inquisitor who was martyred in 1252, flanked by two major saints. Peter Martyr was enormously popular in Dominican and Venetian devotion, and his murder in a forest provided a dramatic subject later famously painted by Titian. Cima's treatment emphasizes the saint's devotional presence rather than the drama of his martyrdom.
Technical Analysis
Cima renders the three saints with his characteristic balanced composition, clear light, and the smooth, precise paint surface that creates an atmosphere of serene devotional contemplation.
