Saint Euphemia
Andrea Mantegna·1454
Historical Context
Andrea Mantegna's Saint Euphemia, dated 1454 and now in the Museo di Capodimonte, Naples, depicts the early Christian martyr from Chalcedon. This is one of Mantegna's earliest signed and dated works, painted when he was just twenty-three. The saint is presented with monumental dignity within an elaborate classical architectural frame, reflecting the young artist's remarkable command of antiquarian detail and his ability to invest devotional subjects with classical grandeur.
Technical Analysis
The early signed work shows Mantegna's fully developed sculptural style with meticulous classical architectural detail, crisp contours, and the stone-like surface modeling that would become his trademark throughout his career.
