Saint Catherine Reading
Antonio da Correggio·1530
Historical Context
Correggio's Saint Catherine Reading from around 1530-1532, now in the Royal Collection, depicts the learned martyr absorbed in study. The painting reflects the Counter-Reformation veneration of Saint Catherine of Alexandria as a model of female intellectual virtue and spiritual fortitude. Oil on canvas — by the sixteenth century the dominant medium for ambitious works — allowed successive glazes of transparent color and freedom to rework the composition.
Technical Analysis
The intimate half-length format and warm, atmospheric handling create a contemplative mood, with Correggio's soft modeling and luminous flesh tones lending the saint an approachable humanity.
