Hope
Raphael·1507
Historical Context
Raphael painted this personification of Hope around 1507, now at the Pinacoteca Vaticana, as one of the theological virtue panels for the predella of his Baglioni Altarpiece in Perugia. The Perugia altarpiece represented Raphael's most ambitious commission to date, and its extensive predella program — including multiple narrative scenes and virtue personifications — allowed him to demonstrate his mastery of figure composition at varying scales. Hope, shown with an anchor or in an attitude of expectant prayer, complemented Faith and Charity in the theological triad. The painting's arrival at the Vatican collection reflects the long history of Italian artistic treasures gravitating toward Rome's institutional collections.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Raphael's characteristic balance of form, luminous coloring, and compositional harmony. The work demonstrates the artistic qualities characteristic of Raphael's mature period.
