Theology
Raphael·1508
Historical Context
Raphael painted this personification of Theology around 1508, now at the Vatican Museums, as a ceiling medallion above the Disputation of the Holy Sacrament fresco — the first of the four great Stanza della Segnatura wall frescoes. Theology crowned the intellectual hierarchy of the papal library program, reflecting the Christian framework within which all other knowledge was understood. The Disputation below depicted the Doctors of the Church alongside the triumphant Church in heaven, establishing the theological foundation for Philosophy, Poetry, and Justice. Raphael's integration of the ceiling medallions with the elaborate wall programs below creates an unprecedented synthesis of decorative and conceptual complexity — a total artistic and intellectual environment that no other papal commission had achieved.
Technical Analysis
