Tobias and the Angel
Historical Context
Savoldo's Tobias and the Angel from around 1542 depicts the Old Testament narrative of the young Tobias guided by the Archangel Raphael during his journey, not yet knowing his companion's true nature. The Tobias story was popular in Florentine and Venetian devotional culture as an image of divine protection in the world — the reassuring story of a young person setting out into the world accompanied by angelic protection they don't recognize. Savoldo's late treatment shows his mature synthesis of Venetian atmospheric color with Lombard naturalism, the angel and young man rendered with the warm, direct observation that gives his religious figures the quality of people encountered in daily life.
Technical Analysis
Savoldo's characteristic nocturnal palette creates an atmosphere of mystery for the journey scene, with silvery highlights on the angel's wings and the fish that Tobias carries.
