The Calling of the Apostles Peter and Andrew
Historical Context
Painted as part of the monumental Maestà altarpiece for Siena Cathedral, completed around 1308–1311, this small predella panel by Duccio di Buoninsegna depicts Christ's first call to his apostles along the Sea of Galilee. The Maestà was one of the most ambitious commissions in medieval Italy and Duccio's masterpiece. This panel exemplifies his genius for condensing complex narrative into intimate compositions, bridging the flat Byzantine tradition with a nascent sense of human gesture and emotional exchange. The diagonal shoreline and overlapping figures represent a significant step toward pictorial depth unusual in Gothic panel painting.
Technical Analysis
Duccio's tempera on gold ground uses crisp contour lines and subtle drapery modelling. The figures are elongated in Byzantine fashion but show greater naturalism in their poses. The stylized waves and the tipped-up spatial plane are characteristic of his synthesis of Eastern and Italian Gothic conventions.
