Portrait of Agostino Barbarigo (c.1420-1501) by Gentile Bellini

Portrait of Agostino Barbarigo (c.1420-1501)

Gentile Bellini·1500

Historical Context

Gentile Bellini painted this Portrait of Doge Agostino Barbarigo around 1500, depicting the head of state of the Venetian Republic. As the official painter of the Republic, Gentile was responsible for documenting the doges and state ceremonies. Barbarigo served as doge from 1486 to 1501. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Portraiture in this period served multiple functions: documenting individual appearance, commemorating social status, and demonstrating the patron's wealth through the quality of the commissioned work.

Technical Analysis

Oil on canvas with Gentile's precise official portrait technique. The doge's distinctive cap (corno) and ceremonial robes are rendered with the documentary accuracy expected of state portraiture.
