Madonna and Child with Musical Angels
Historical Context
The Master of the Legend of Saint Lucy painted this Madonna and Child with Musical Angels around 1500 in Bruges. This refined anonymous master produced some of the most delicate and ethereal devotional paintings of the late Bruges school. The musical angels create a heavenly atmosphere around the Madonna. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the Master's characteristically delicate, pale palette and refined technique. The musical angels' instruments and the Virgin's graceful pose are rendered with exquisite precision.
