Leeuw by Wilhelm Kuhnert

Leeuw

Wilhelm Kuhnert·1903

Historical Context

Leeuw (Lion) by Wilhelm Kuhnert, dated 1903, represents a subject central to his entire career. Kuhnert was virtually synonymous with lion painting in early-twentieth-century German art — his African expeditions gave him direct access that no studio painter could claim, and he returned with sketches, studies, and memories that informed decades of work. Lions carried obvious symbolic freight in European culture as emblems of power, courage, and wild nature, and the appetite for Kuhnert's authoritative depictions was enormous. The Rijksmuseum Twenthe holds this work alongside other examples from the same productive period.

Technical Analysis

The lion is modelled with Kuhnert's characteristic precision in the anatomy of the head and mane, the musculature rendered convincingly through careful tonal work. The surrounding savannah setting is handled more broadly, with loose warm tones suggesting parched grass and open sky.
