Triptych with the Adoration of the Magi
Historical Context
The Master of Hoogstraeten painted this Triptych with the Adoration of the Magi around 1507. The Epiphany subject was one of the most splendid in the Christian calendar, allowing artists to depict exotic costumes, precious gifts, and the international scope of Christ's kingship. The triptych format provided space for an elaborate rendering of the scene. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel in triptych format with vivid coloring and detailed narrative staging. The central Adoration scene is enriched by flanking panels that extend the narrative or provide devotional context.
